SOLD! Butterflies & flowers 6-pen wrap

"Good morning!"

I love this fabric. It is bold, bright, and looks fantastic teamed with the rich orange lining - I still have my orange crush going on, and so I really enjoyed making this bright beauty! Orange is such a happy colour, I feel that no matter what drudgery the working day might have in store for you, it would be impossible to stay glum upon opening this wrap to that cheery lining. "Good morning!", it bellows to your retinas! "Wake the hell up!"

Both outer and lining fabrics are strong cotton canvas, so when teamed together make for a durable wrap for carefree use. All seams are triple-stitched for resilience. The wrap fits six large fountain pens. (Or other kinds of pens, if you're that kind of person. It's okay, I won't judge.)

Beyond that orange lining, my favourite aspect of this wrap is that I managed to get the flap and the pouch patterns to line up exactly! I'm a perfectionist in my sewing - when edge stitching I go stitch-by-stitch to ensure that these most visible seams are straight and even - so the fact that I managed to align the patterns so well gives me major geeky thrill.

Finished in Amy Butler decor-weight satin cotton fabric, the wrap features complementary prints both outside and inside, and on the tie.

It is a best fit for small-medium fountain pens such as the Pilot Prera, Pilot Custom Heritage 72, Pelikan M20x & M40x ranges. It does fit my larger M805 and Vanishing Points, with complete coverage by the flap, but these would be the size limit for this wrap.

SOLD! Zen Tattoo luxe 6-pen wrap

This wrap features the amazing Zen Tattoo print fabric with the black background, by Alexander Henry. It is lined in a very fine satin suede material that has a moleskin-like finish, both protecting and gently polishing pens.

The satin reverse side of this fabric makes it quite slippery to sew, and the need to go carefully meant that this second wrap took a lot longer to finish than my first! It is just lovely to feel though and very much worth the extra care.

The 3-pen pouch

Following the success of my pen wraps yesterday, I set about working on a smaller design, a tight, tidy little 3-pen pouch to suit a core set of EDC pens.

Why three? Well I think a 3-pen team is a great number to carry for general work and daily duty, giving enough scope for colour and nib options without the burden and risk of more pens in your bag. Although I used to carry more I cut back to taking just three into work with me as I found that I simply didn't use them all, and was just exposing them to increase risk of theft or damage without due cause.

Three pens does not warrant a wrap, but the linear pouch format is perfect. The size and flat shape of a small pouch fits well into jacket chest pockets, flat pockets within bags and briefcases, and can easily slip into a flat or round pencil case for added protection. Given the simple design of this pouch it is also a great little item that I can readily run up in half the time of a wrap, and sell at a more affordable price for buyers seeking an EDC solution.

The prototype turned out quite well, and I immediately integrated some necessary refinements into the second iteration of this design, which turned out perfect and immediately ready for sale. Happy! Now I just need to make one for myself, and sell the bulky Visconti two-pen case that I have been using..

My pen hobby has a new hobby!

I came home from work yesterday afternoon with a bee in my bonnet and the burning urge to sit down and sew something. I've done a lot of quilting in the past, but with work, running, and Life™in general consuming much of my time and attention of late, this hobby had very much gone into stasis. It was really nice therefore to feel energised about a new project, so for the first time in months I switched on my sewing machine, with an apology for my neglect, and two hours later had my first completed prototype pen wrap!

For the first playaround try I just worked from a handy piece of fabric that seemed about the right length, and did some testing with pens to determine how much space to allow each pen across the width. The end result is a little shorter than I'd prefer, suiting pens more like the M400 or Pilot Prera than my M805s or Conid, but as a proof of concept piece it turned out great and established a set of baselines measurements from which I set about creating the second prototype.

For number two I used some beautiful Alexander Henry material, Zen Tattoo, featuring stylised Japanese designs against a black background. I'd snagged the last few metres in all three colourways a few years ago when it was discontinued and going out of stock, and have been wanting the right project to show off the amazing illustrations. Turns out that a pen wrap is the perfect size to capture two or three icons, and the material gives lots of different images to choose from as the main feature.

I cut the fabric to capture the Samurai warrior on the large back panel, and both the tiger and the fighting dragon & eagle on the inside pouch panel. Cutting for specific areas unfortunately incurs wastage in the unused areas around the selected images, but I was able to salvage a good long strip to use for the tie. For the lining I used a soft satin suede material that was probably intended for use in a garment rather than a pen case. The slippery satin back of the suede fabric proved tricksy to manage and required extra pinning, and this combined with the added time to cut and sew specific panels added up to double the completion time of the first wrap. It was worth the extra care though as it turned out great for only my second try.

Tomorrow I'll try making a 3-pen sleeve and another wrap or two!
